This is not a unique Anime but, I still think of it in a different light. It does what what any truly great horror movie does: it gives you an eerie feeling while your watching it.  It is a difficult feeling to describe...it's disturbing, but not repulsive.  In fact it is enjoyable, compelling, and satisfying.
It's your typical lone, highly-skilled, all-business hero versus the mystically powerful forces of evil, but with a twist.  He is not beyond the grasp of evil, nor is he immune to the advances of women.  He is honor bound and determined to do his duty, like any good samurai, but he does not leave his humanity behind.  It is a little unique to see a seemingly emotionless hero act in ways that betray his cold-as-ice exterior.  One might say it makes him very real.  The characters are excellently presented in this film, the art is good (great at points), and the fighting scenes are very well done.  There are scenes and images in this film that will stay with you.  Add to that the cool weaponry and fighting styles of the characters and you've got quality.  What I particularly like about this anime is the fact that it does not glorify its own violence.  Blood Reign is about the pain and sorrow that violence and evil bring to the world, and why some people must fight it.  It is not about empty violence for its own sake.

"Blood Reign is about the pain and sorrow that violence and evil bring to the world, and why some people must fight it."

I consider Blood Reign one of my favorite anime.  I recommend this film highly for fans of Ninja Scroll and/or Vampire Hunter D.  I wouldn't call it fun, I wouldn't even call it exciting, but I would call it compelling, impressive, beautiful, and well worth a rental.
