This book deals with the making of Grindhouse; the double feature tribute to B movies by Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino. Grindhouses were where you would watch two movies for the price of one. These films were horribly acted and extremely low budget. The only choice of these filmmakers like Roger Corman was to exploit their material through sex, violence, and drugs. With Robert Rodriquez and Quentin Tarantino, you have the budget, the real actors, and the coherent dialogue these past films were missing but the exploitative elements are always there. Planet Terror was made by a director who liked the genre and Death Proof was made by a director who loved the genre. You realize where the influences for each movie came from through reading interviews from the two directors. With this book, you have storyboards, making-of anecdotes, and interviews with the stunt people and special effects crew. I enjoyed reading Robert Rodriguez’s screenplay because I got to read parts that were not in the movie. Did you kn ow that Geraldo Rivera was supposed to be in the movie? In the screenplay, the virus has spread beyond Texas and Geraldo Rivera is reporting the news, which is like a nod to George A. Romero’s Night of the Living Dead. I’m kind of upset that Quentin Tarantino did not put his screenplay in but at least he explains the famous car cash sequence in tremendous detail. Did you know Quentin Tarantino had a list of songs already made for the jukebox in the bar in Death Proof?
I also wanted to know more about Machete (played by Danny Trejo) after watching the fake trailer. Did you know that the trailer for Machete was really about illegal immigration? Guess what Machete did? I realized this after watching the fake trailer a second time; Machete united the illegal immigrants to fight against their opposers. I also knew that Machete was a tribute to Escape from New York because Robert Rodriguez is a huge John Carpenter fan like me. I also liked the back story behind the Thanksgiving trailer by Eli Roth. Before I go on about the Thanksgiving trailer, I want to talk a little about Rob Zombie’s fake trailer, Werewolf Women of the SS. Did you know Nicholas Cage, the star of Werewolf Women of the SS, did the trailer for free? Did you know Nicholas Cage and Rob Zombie have been friends since way back? Now back to the fake trailer by Eli Roth. After watching movies like Black Christmas, Halloween, and April Fools Day, Eli Roth figured the next holiday slasher movie would be Thanksgiving. Since that did not happen, Eli Roth and his best friend wrote their own Thanksgiving slasher movie. His best friend even plays the slasher, The Pilgrim, in the trailer. Did you know he was working on Thanksgiving as well as Hostel Part II at the same time? This Making-of Grindhouse book is filled with attention-grabbing screenplays, fun facts, and in depth interviews. The grindhouses were a one-of-a kind experience, which is why so many people were involved in this project by Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez.
