Reading the Hobbit for the first
time was an extraordinary adventure. The second and third
times were each thrilling. As I learned more about the
characters, the places the traveled and their quest, I became
more and more personally involved. |

I was in my twenties when I first read The Hobbit,
but I was taken away on Bilbo's adventure as I might have been
as a young boy. Let me admit here, that I love the classic
romantic adventure novels. Characters like the Count of
Monte Cristo and Anthony Adverse took my attention instantly and
held it like it was gold. Bilbo and Gandalf
accomplished this with even more intensity.
I so loved this book, this adventure, this part
of my life - which it became - so much that I was desperately
disappointed when I became aware that Frodo, not Bilbo, was to
be the hero of the Lord of the Rings. If not for Gandalf,
I might have dropped the book instantly.
And of course, I'm glad I didn't. But it
did take me some time to come to terms with this new person
leading me on an adventure. |

My children are now fans. My son came to it
before the movies, but the younger two have the films, great in
themselves, but lacking so much of the wonderment and - will you
allow me to say it again? - the adventure, because of the shear
enormity of the story in each book (meaning, the Lord of the
Rings series.) |
