Biker gangs, telekinesis, and mutants...oh
my! The future's a rough place, but Kaneda's rougher
and ready to take on any obstacle that comes his
way...until that obstacle is his fellow biker gang member,
Tetsuo, who has been the part of a secret experiment
designed to make him a super-powerful madman bent on world
domination. But then, how could he see that coming?

What do you say about the classic?
Well, no one who calls him/herself an Otaku (anime fan)
can do so without seeing this film. The Die-Hards
always say it is "the best," "the mother of
them all", etc., etc. To the average moviegoer
(a non-Otaku), Akira is confusing and disturbing.
Truly, the only thing more baffling to them than Akira's
plot, is the amazing fan base and cult following the film
has. To their credit, let's face it, the film is
somewhat oblique.
Despite that fact, Akira is a good sci-fi
film that set the tone for most of the Anime that followed
it. I always enjoy a viewing of Akira because I love
the characters, the art, and the concept. |

When I think of this film, I think of
Blade Runner (Director's Cut). Not because they have
that much in common, but they have a very similar
vibe. If you have the patience and the interest,
then I think you should rent this puppy, but I do suggest
against buying it before you see it. In many ways
it's not that good a film, but in just as many ways it
really is the mother of all anime and a great example of
what a serious anime can be. I love it.
