The Animatrix is a collection of top quality animated shorts that
relate to the films The Matrix and
The
Matrix Reloaded. They're sort of like
prequels to The Matrix, although they aren't
directly related to either Matrix films.
|
|
The
series features some of my favorite anime directors
including Shinichirô Watanabe (the genius behind Cowboy
Bebop) and Yoshiaki Kawajiri (the genius behind Vampire
Hunter D: Bloodlust, Ninja
Scroll, Cyber City Oedo 808,
X).
The only problem is with the individual shorts
themselves. Some are good, some are bad.

In my opinion, the best shorts are Final Flight of The
Osiris, Second Renaissance parts 1 & 2, Kid's
Story, and Program. Final Flight of
the Osiris is a quick and very familiar Matrix journey
that sets up The Matrix Reloaded. It features
top quality computer animation and a lot of action. Second
Renaissance is the story of what began the war against
the machines and eventually led to the construction of The
Matrix. Kid's Story shows the awakening of a
teenaged boy from The Matrix who is showcased in Matrix
Reloaded. Program is a real trip for anime
fans. It demonstrates a training program set in feudal
Japan and the rigorous training that human soldiers must
go through in order to fight the machines. Each of
these tales adds a new dimension to the Matrix saga.

|
The other tales are similar. All of them are great
eye candy and fun stories to muse on. They are
however a little disturbing and bizarre for a young
audience. Basically, if you are old enough to watch
and enjoy The Matrix, then you are old enough to
see them.
|
|
You don't have to be a Matrix fan to enjoy
these animated shorts, but, if you are a Matrix fan, The
Animatrix is a must-see.
