Ice
Age
by Christian De Matteo
Solid
I like cartoons.
Whenever one comes out that’s not related to Disney’s
formulaic trash (Pixar is, of course, thus far excluded from this), I
want to see it. When I saw
that Denis Leary and John Leguizamo were going to be doing voices in the
same flick, I was psyched. That
and the damn preview with the Ice Age squirrel cracked me the
hell up.
Well, I wasn’t disappointed. Ice Age is a fun, cute flick with some very good
laughs, nothing hysterical, but frequent enough that you’ll find
yourself smiling throughout. Leguizamo
is excellent as Sid the Sloth, putting on just kooky enough of a voice
so that it is still understandable (take note, Mr. Sandler).
Ray Romano did his own voice, which complemented his big ole
hairy mammoth character perfectly.
My only issue, and it’s a small one, is that
Denis Leary, famous for his classic rants, has the calmest character in
the film, Diego the Sabertooth. His
character is very good, a tad bit reminiscent of Sher Khan the Tiger
from Disney’s excellent (before they began churning out garbage) The
Jungle Book. Diego is a
fine questionable character, but is very calm…and that’s not what I
wanted from Leary. Granted, I wanted him going off about coffee and the Lord of
the Dance every five minutes. I’ll
deal; it worked for the film.
The basic plot is simple enough to engage a child
and open enough to allow for a good deal of adventure.
The script is sharp and moves the plot along well with plenty of
laughs and there are plenty of fun visuals.
The animation is very good and there’s enough emotion to make
it an all around experience.
Overall, a very good flick, fun for the kids, fun
for the adults and well worth the time spent watching.
Funniest thing you’ve ever seen?
Not at all, but a quality bit of cartoon entertainment.
