Down
by Two and it Just Started: The Musketeer
by Michael Flanagan
Wimpy
I don’t know what would
lead someone to make this movie.
First, you take Alexandre Dumas’ classic
novel “The Three Musketeers” and remove two of
the title characters to supporting roles.
Then you get internationally acclaimed
martial arts choreographer Xiong Xin Xin.
I don’t know what the three other people
in the theatre were thinking, but I couldn’t
help but wonder how much arrogance it really took
for a group of filmmakers to actually have this
meeting:
Filmmaker # 1: Let’s jump
on the Crouching Tiger wagon.
Filmmaker #2: Okay.
How about The Three Musketeers?
Filmmaker #1: Sounds
good…except…I really don’t want to put any
effort into this thing.
Let’s just get it out the door quickly.
Filmmaker #2: Right.
How about The One Musketeer?
Filmmaker #1: Perfect!
Filmmaker #2: Whom should we
get to direct?
Filmmaker #1: How about the
guy who did Sudden Death?
Filmmaker #2: Sounds good to
me. Just make it martial artsy.
Filmmaker #1: Isn’t it set
in medieval France?
Filmmaker #2: Yes.
Yes it is.
Sometimes I just
don’t get what people think will be a good idea.
