Training
Day
by JE De Matteo
HUGE
It’s rare that I
agree with the Academy on anything.
As a matter of fact I stopped watching the
Oscars years ago.
I’m not particularly interested in
meeting the characters that most of the actors are
playing in real life…it makes it harder for me
to buy the characters they portray in the movies.
But…
Now
let me tell you about my opinion of Denzel
Washington. I
like him, he’s an excellent actor, and I enjoy
most of his movies.
Denzel
is like John Wayne and Clint Eastwood in this
regard. In
most of the movies they play the same guy in a
different life. This is not a negative, and I don’t mean it to sound like
one. For
most actors, this trait would be the kiss of
death, but these three gentlemen are great
characters in themselves, and it works.
Sure I’m always aware that I’m watching
John Wayne, but he plays all the parts so well it
doesn’t matter, same with Clint Eastwood, and
Denzel.
In Training
Day I forgot I was watching Denzel Washington,
Dog. This
is a powerful movie, with a powerful performance
from Denzel.
Okay
Academy, I’ll give you this one.
But I’m still not tuning in.
Ethan
Hawke puts in a fantastic performance, complete
with having me understand the powerful statement
of his waking up 30 seconds before his alarm goes
off at 5 AM, on the second watching, of course.
I love his T1000 walk into the War Zone in
the “I’m here for Alonzo” scene.
All
the characters and extras are perfect, which is
important to making this movie so real, so
believable.
Antoine Fuqua, primo, just plain primo.
And he even worked white birds into
the movie (a nod to John Woo?).
Yes
this is a HUGE movie, and a Mo’ HUGE DVD, a must
for you collection.
