Cool or cool?
by Joe De Matteo
Solid
After the first
viewing of BeCool I have very mixed
feelings about the film. The characters
are good to great, the story is compelling,
almost everything is COOL, but there is
something missing. It does not have that
flow of Get Shorty. Maybe it's the
editing. At times it's more TV than at
other times. |

Vince Vaughn, worthy of the success he's
enjoying, is hard for me to take in most of the
rolls I've seen him in. I liked his
performance in Dodge Ball, I enjoyed
Wedding Crashers, but his basic character is
hard for me to take - maybe it's a generational
thing, Christian likes him a lot, Vaughn makes
me antsy and, in some cases, angry - in Be
Cool, however, his character Raji is
perfect. Raji is a Loki character, but by
accident. However, the many problems that
he and other characters cause in this intricate
plot, seem to chop up the film. It's like a
series of great skit ideas that were poorly
woven into a film.
Travolta's Chili Palmer's is right on, but
doesn't fit in the rest of what's going on in
film. Maybe it's the falult of the
director, M Gary Gray, who's Italian Job,
may have had some of the same problem, but to a
far less degree. |

The Rock was great. What a great, fun
character, and he played it fantastically.
I like the Rock, his tough-guy performances, he
has a great stage presence. Elliot
Wilhelm, the very gay body guard, is fun.
His dance before the mirror scene was one of
many high points of the film.
All the characters are wonderful, so much so
that I bought the DVD, even though I don't
usually buy anything that isn't Super or HUGE.
It's been some time since I've watched the film,
I will again soon and report back to you.
I certainly recommend the film to those who
like any of the actors in it, or have seen and
like Get Shorty. I'd like your take
on it. Write a review and send it to me.
(But
read "How To Write a Review" first)
More to come.
