I enjoyed the first Bourne flick just fine
until the last scene where Jason somehow develops the
ability to fly in what must be the most ridiculous looking
action shot I've seen in a while (the round
staircase/perfectly balanced corpse scene). That took
a bit away from the flick for me, but not a great deal.
It was an adequate diversion. I would never buy it,
mind you, but I was glad I'd rented it.
Yesterday I saw The Bourne Supremacy at the prompting of my
girlfriend who like the sound of the plot.... right.
Matt Damon's plot, did you say? (Side Note:
Some c*cksucker stole $40 dollars from her purse in the
theater and if I think I know who you are,
Mr-My-Highest-Aspiration-In-Life-Is-Cleaning-The-Ju-Ju-Beans-Off-The-Floor-With-My-Big-Mop-Head.
I go to this theater a lot in Greenburgh, Westchester, New
York, and I'll be watching you... oh, yes, you snot nosed
prick, I'll be watching. Jack Ass.)
This time around I found Bourne, in the words of a man I
used to know, resoundingly adequate. A better, more
exciting picture, with a better car chase and some excellent
minimalist acting by Matt Damon, who I do normally like.
A period of the film finds Matt Damon not even speaking for
at least twenty minutes, so focused in is he on his angry
revenge. His character this time around is completely
proactive, going straight to the source instead of ducking
in corners and hiding out. Damon is pissed at the
death of someone (not to spoil anything, but it happens in
the first ten minutes) and he wants this to be over.
The acting is quite good on other fronts as well, since
Julia Stiles is given more to do and Brian Cox is fantastic.
The flashbacks to part one's Chris Cooper character are also
excellent. Joan Allen was excellent.
Why only resoundingly adequate then? Well, this time
around, the film is directed by a fellow named Paul
Greengrass who does an admirable job of taking the helm from
part one's Doug Liman, and does indeed make a better movie.
Unfortunately he likes to play with editing to amp up drama,
going so far as to leap frog images of Matt Damon washing
his hands. Unfortunately as good as a job as he does
on the rest of the flick, he botches an excellent fight
scene between Bourne and the last remaining Threadstone
operative with his quick-cuts that make it nearly impossible
to follow who is not even winning but doing anything!
He does it again, I'm sad to report in a car chase scene
that promised to be one of the best on film... except what
the f*ck is going on? A close up on Matt Damon's car
door does not Wow me in a car chase if I have no point of
reference as to where the car is or what the hell the car is
doing. Mind you, one can still enjoy the chase, but
something is definitely taken away.
Otherwise, the film is very enjoyable and certainly worth
catching. Better than the first as I hope the third
will be better than the second... and not have the damn
issue with the cuts. |
