December 2005 - Joe De Matteo
Expectations for the success of Cars are
high. In a UBS Global Media Conference meeting
in New York on the 7th, Martin Durant, chief
financial officer of Carmike Cinemas, said that
something dramatic had to happen in 2006 to have box
office be lower than in 2005. In other words,
2006 is expected to be a good year for box office
revenue. To illustrate his point that 2006
will be a growth year, he named 5 films, the first
of which was...you guessed it, Cars.
I don't know about 2006 box office,
but I have high expectations for Cars.

For those of us who are both enamored with Route 66, the
legendary Mother Road, and are fans of
Pixar, this film falls right into the "I
can't wait" category. The original
title of the film was Route 66, I'm
sorry they changed it.
Interestingly, there is
movement afoot to have Congress
reinstate the famous highway that winds
its way from Chicago, IL to Los Angles,
CA, traveling through some of America's
great and historic towns along the way.
(Concise
history of Route 66, written by Donna
Cypret of Route66Proud.com).
The official line on Cars is that
a stock car, Lighting Mc Queen voiced by
Owen Wilson, finds himself on Route 66
on his way to a big race and gets into
"an adventure," or something like that.
Mc Queen is supposed to be a hot shot,
cocky speedster, which sounds like a
perfect roll for the very talented Owen
Wilson. |

I understand that Jorgen Klubien wrote
and illustrated the original concept for
Cars. Klubien was story
development artist on
Monsters, Inc. and
Toy Story 2, as well as
A Bug's Life
(for which he also has co-writer
credit).
This film
may very well be the last collaboration
between Disney and Pixar. The very
popular
Pixar is said to be talking to
Warner Brothers and 20 Century Fox. |
