Ron Howard, continuing his not-so-knightly
quest for the holy Oscar, presents another human triumph
story starring Russell Crowe. I hated A Beautiful Mind
(despite my lukewarm review, I did back then, but as time
passed I began hating it more) but this looks like it could
be good. Telling the true story of Jim
Braddock, a comeback king during the Depression giving hope
to millions when there was little hope to be found.
Now, I'm a sucker for a good boxing movie, from Rocky, to
Raging Bull to Million Dollar Baby, I love 'em.
Regardless, formerly my favorite director I'm a tad wary of
Howard's sentimentality factor, and how sappy sweet the love
story between Braddock and Zellweger's character will be,
how sappy the inspiration will be, and the really bad
feeling I have that Braddock's gonna die at the end so Crowe
can get a death scene Oscar. There's not a lot of buzz
yet about how good it is, but we'll see what we get. I
loved Backdraft, I loved Apollo 13, I loved The Grinch, but
I did miss The Missing and hated A Beautiful Mind.
I'll give him the benefit of the doubt, but I do hope I
don't get burned. Check out the preview here,
