| Human
beings are being kidnapped and turned into cybernetic
super soldiers for a mysterious organization.
Young Joe Shimamura is the ninth such cyborg. He
awakens in a laboratory to the sound of a voice speaking
directly into his mind. The voice warns Joe to
escape the lab ASAP. Once outside, Joe meets the
other eight cyborgs and they ban together to defeat the
evil organization that did this to them, as well as try
to return to a semi-normal life. Each cyborg has
his or her own extraordinary talent such as flight,
telepathy, speed, or strength. They use their
abilities together as a team to fight for what's right
and understand the role of cyborgs in their modern
world. |
| This
Cyborg 009 is the updated modern version. The
original show aired in 1966. This is, in fact, the
third show based off of Shotaro Ishinomori's original
comic. This modern version is a unique anime to be
released in America. Not because of its storyline,
but because of its character design. |
 |
| The
characters feature exaggerated features and wild
hairstyles. They are drawn to look like
cartoons. This style is a throwback to golden age
anime where the characters looked more like Betty Boop
than the more proportionate characters we've grown
accustomed to in anime. The reason, of course,
being that the original show aired in 1966 and the
character designs were not updated to today's standard
look. Personally, I enjoy this departure from the
current status quo, but I think this element might make
the show an acquired taste. |
| The
storyline is intriguing. Many of the episodes deal
more with the human element of the characters rather
than the fighting. The episodes always manage to
incorporate enough action to keep viewers interested,
but they are more focused on the trials and tribulations
of these cybernetic people's personal existences. |
| Overall,
the show is very good. It is not what I would call
one of my favorites, but I respect it and recommend that
you check it out.
