Think Bonnie and
Clyde...With Blood...Well, More Blood
by Michael Flanagan
Super
Christian and I sat down to watch House of 1000 Corpses the
other day, with a certain amount of trepidation, and to our
good fortune, it was a damn goood horror movie. Good
enough, in fact, that we saw this sequel in the theater.
How does it hold up? While it's different
than House, it's just as good. It basically takes the
fish of House, immediately places them out of water, and
lets them flop around for about two hours until there's been
enough carnage and bloodshed to call it a day. Like
House, it's chock full of references to old
seventies/eighties horror classics like Last House on the
Left and Texas Chainsaw Massacre. These references,
though, are subtly thematic, making for an entirely original
and interesting picture on its. own. Rob Zombie has
once again proven himself a damn, albeit twisted, director.
One additional note: (spoiler) The end of the movie features
the best use of Skynyrd's Free Bird I've ever seen put to
use on film. It clearly shows Zombie's knowledge of
musical timing, and at the same time it plays over a great
Bonnie & Clyde style shootout finale. For horror movie
fans, especially seventies horror fans, this is a must-see. |
