If you can dodge a wrench...
by Joe De Matteo
Super
Get ready to laugh.
Right from the get go Dodgeball delivers laugh on top of
laugh; and there are laughs for everyone. There are
in-your-face laughs, dumb laughs, thought provoking ones, silly
ones, and even politically incorrect laughs.
This sophomoric laughfest introduces us to cast of quirky,
absurd characters for each of whom there is a message that can
only be summed up by the feeling that it is all right to be a
pirate. "Arf!" (You'll get the joke in
that hard to read sentence after you see the movie.)
Patches O'Houlihan (Rip Torn), the legendary Dodgeball
player, rolls out of obscurity to be the underdoggers with a
mission's Yoda. No offence to Yoda intended. The
cornerstones of his training are the Five Ds, the fact that if
you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a dodgeball, oh, and if
you can dodge a... On second thought, I'll let you learn
that one on your own.
Vince Vaughn is perfectly cast as Vince Vaughn the
quintessential Peter La Fleur, owner (for how much longer?) of
the Average Joe's Gym.
Talk about characters, what about White Goodman (Ben Stiller)
the wealthy, self absorbed, over the top, way, way over the top,
Machiavellian entity: the bad guy. This is the guy who
became rich because of his hard work, dedication and his
inheritance.
All the characters are great and wonderfully funny on so many
levels. From the pratfalls, slapstick, sarcasm, deadpan to
the wisecracks and set up jokes, you'll have at least 80 minutes
of laughs from this 88 minute movie.
There are so many great lines in this comedy, but the one
I've heard a million times, it's in all the trailers, is still
my favorite. The obnoxious White Goodman is coming on to
his attorney, Kate Veatch (Christine Taylor). Kate gags
and says, "I just threw up in my mouth a little bit."
This is a keeper, meaning, buy the DVD.
