"Bueller?...Bueller." As the deadpan, monotonic economics
teacher in Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Ben Stein made this one liner
an eternal addition to American pop culture. He's even talked
repeatedly to his wife Alexandra about having it inscribed on his
tombstone. |
| Stein' s illustrious career spans nearly 40 years including law,
writing, acting, teaching, speechwriting for the late President
Nixon, President Gerald Ford and game show hosting. He became an
activist for the pro-life movement, receiving a Pro-Life Award in
2003 from the National Right To Life Educational Trust Fund.
Now, the former American University professor takes on another
controversial sociopolitical subject- Intelligent Design. Or, to be
perfectly non-politically correct, the belief in a single all
powerful creator. In other words, God. It's been a hotly debated
topic and, unlike some of the unfair practices imposed on those who
do believe in an Intelligent Designer, Stein insures that both sides
have a platform for their arguments.
|
|
| Expelled, as the title suggests, refers to the
number of scientists and professors who have been permanently
stigmatized because of their even mentioning verbally or on paper
their serious doubts about Darwinism, challenging the status quo and
stating that there could be an alternative origin of life on this
planet. These include Richard Sternberg, Caroline Crocker and
Guillermo Gonzalez who all lost either grants, tenure, their jobs or
all of the above courtesy of the powers that be. It may seem that
this is a one sided argument brought on by Stein since he himself
rejects evolution. But when some of the "powers that be" deny that
Intelligent Design was the reason for Crocker, Sternberg and
Gonzalez's dismissal, you simply can't help but to wonder if their
afraid of something.
"Freedom is the essence of America," Stein proclaims in his own
inimitable way, underscoring the film with the fairness of all
opinions and ideas to be on the table. And not to be completely
disregarded without at least discussing them openly. He finds
unfaltering defense from foreign circles in Paris based
mathematician David Berlinski and Oxford professor Alister McGrath.
Tyro director Nathan Frankowski offers up a humorous tone by
focusing on some of the most preposterous theories some of our
scientific "experts" have on the origin of life on earth. Even if I
were not a Christian, I would still find it a bit difficult to
believe that human life started on the backs of crystals.
Probably the most brutal antagonist to ID that Stein encounters
is evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins ,whose absolutely scathing
description of God in his 2006 book "The God Delusion" would make
even some agnostics twinge ( the following year Alister McGrath's
critical response, "The Dawkins Delusion" was published). Dawkins is
a determined atheist. Yet, through Stein's pointed questions you
realize there is a chink in his armor.
With all the cerebral experts Stein interviews, it was quite
disappointing that Kent Hovind, affectionately known as Dr. Dino,
could not participate. He is currently in federal prison for tax
evasion. His testimonies in the field of creation science would have
givenevolutionists like Dawkins a triple migraine, not to mention
that it would've made Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed a much more
thought provoking documentary than it already is. |

Before and After: updates and
previews |

2008 - by Richard Lombardo
You know it's amazing to me how the American Left
works - they are anti-religion (except their own
religions of European Socialism as a stop over
toward Communism - so maybe I should say anti-God,
and while they're hatred of America because it isn't
part of a Socialist One-World government bothers me
too, it is not what brought this rant on - when
something, political view, a creative work or a
concept is in their disfavor, they follow a formula,
which is not to debate it, but to go after their
opponent personally via hit-job or ridicule.
Most of the reviews and
commentary that I've seen, some of which were
pre-view hit pieces of this pro-Intelligent Design
documentary.
As an example, in one of
these pieces they sneak about the film maker and
projected views with phrases like, "church-goers"
(in quotes), who do not normally go to the movies.
Like there is something wrong with church goers;
and, in there mind there is.
The other technique of
destroying or making fun of the people rather than
debating the concepts is in play here too.
These fools (that's a joke). One unknowing, or
uncaring or duplicits commentator makes his point
with sarcasm, he states that Mr. Stein's career
trajectory points to natural selection. Well,
young son, Ben Stein has far more under his belt
than his work in Hollywood. Mr. Stein has a
note worthy career in finance, too.
I'm off to see the film
and will give you my review soon. This just
had to be said.
