The movie
tells the tale of Joel, a quiet, slightly neurotic... um,
Charlie Kaufman character (see Adaptation)
who meets a quirky (f*cking beautiful) young woman named
Clementine. Joel is so damn well performed by Jim Carrey
in what is truly his ultimate acting turn, and Kate
Winslet as Tangerine (not a typo) reminds us why she was the
only part of Titanic we loved... aside from the wholesale
slaughter and people bouncing off various part of the ships.
Director
Michael Gondry's attention to detail (down to the very
pillowcases on Joel's bed) makes the film completely
believable as well as emotionally powerful.
Ultimately this is a love story. A love story about the
importance of not ruling things out, assuming we know the end,
ruling anything out before we give it a go... even if we're
pretty sure we know the outcome. This is a romantic
comedy that acknowledges that love isn't easy, and doesn't
always end well, but that we have to do it anyway... we have
no other choice except misery.
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is, like a Magritte, a
work of art, beautiful in point, style and execution.
The film is funny and visually intricate, engaging and
philosophical, my favorite Kaufman script since Malkovich.
I can't wait to own this and watch it over and over again.
