Space,
the Final Fun Tier: Galaxy Quest
by
Michael Flanagan
Solid
Watching Galaxy Quest reaffirms one
clear fact: Disney
does not have the run of family oriented fun movies.
Dreamworks Pictures has repeatedly shown this
through releases one great family film after
another, and we, the viewing public, should take
notice. There’s
nothing wrong with a studio known for its family
films. There
is something wrong with a studio whose name
becomes synonymous with Family Fun like Kleenex is
synonymous with “tissues.”
Galaxy Quest has more smarts and savvy
than many of its space-movie family film
predecessors. It
has kids jokes, adult humor, and a great premise.
Star Trek goes real.
Except Star Trek’s stars wouldn’t have
nearly this much fun.
The aging, though still attractive (Holy
Sigourney Weaver!) ex-stars of the old television
show Galaxy Quest (hence the name) discover that
their broadcasts have been picked up by aliens in
space who believe the stars to be space heroes so
they get them and involve them in an intergalactic
war. Not
only is it fun, it’s a better plot than anything
Star Trek has come up with in years!
And Captain Kirk was good, but he’s no Tim
Allen! The
man who sold his soul to The Mouse comes alive again
in this film, giving a performance both hilarious,
and, at times, heartwarming.
A movie with plot, humor, great special
effects, and a deeper sociological satirical meaning
that’s fun for the whole family; please, take the
time to write a letter and have Galaxy Quest
listed as an example for Family Fun in the
dictionary. Call
Webster today!

By Grapthar's Hammer, What a Savings! This is a great story
about an alien civilization that sees our TV broadcasts of a Star
Trek-like TV series called Galaxy Quest and completely reproduce the
TV technology, like the 'transporter', the turbo speed space travel,
and yes, even the Omega-13 time alteration device. |
| The musical score is fantastic, a fanfare of space-epic
proportions. The brass sections combined with choral music is
wonderful; inspiring! Great moral: the captain (Tim Allen)
realizes that the kids who are fans of
the show and know everything about the sci-fi series have just saved
his life,
at which point he realizes that his "crew" have been critical to his
success
all along. This meta-morphasis occurs right at the beginning of the
absolute
best musical score ever.

|
| Repeating all the musical themes of the movie, the
"credits concert" is a masterpiece. Just Completely Wonderful ! |
