The movie, Hellboy, is one of the best films
Guillermo Del Toro has made. Everything that Mexican
director Guillermo Del Toro has made like La Hora
Marcada and Blade 2 has led up to this artistic
achievement. As a fan of the Hellboy comic books, I wondered
how Guillermo Del Toro was going to bring the
mythology on the big screen. The history of the X-Men
was cut down in the movies and Barbara Gordon’s back
story was ruined in the latest Batman movie. After
seeing Hellboy, the changes Del Toro made are like the
changes John Shirley and David J. Schow made for the
James O Barr’s graphic novel, The Crow. Del Toro’s
script fills in the blanks and expands on the back
stories of the major characters.
The cast is perfect in bringing to life Mike
Mignola’s work. Only Ron Perlman could have played
Hellboy. I liked hearing all his sarcastic one-liners. |

In special effects, this is what the Hulk wanted to be
but failed. Classic make-up work in Hellboy outdoes
what CGI attempted to do in the Hulk. Selma Blair is
perfect as Liz Sherman and she can really handle
herself in a dramatic role. Only David Hyde Pierce
could be the voice of Abraham Sapien. The banter
between Hellboy and Abraham Sapien sounds cheerfully a
lot like Frasier and Niles on the big screen. |

Hellboy is a love story and a coming of age story all
wrapped up in an action adventure movie. The love
story between Liz and Hellboy works in its change of
calming pace and childish fun after all the monster
vs. monster action. Hellboy is a rebel who would
rather drink beer then save the day from evil. Hellboy
isn’t as heroic as Superman but he sure has fun when
he gets the job done.
This is one of the best comic
book adaptations and it is the best film from
Guillermo Del Toro.
These are great DVDs, the commentary it excellent.
