Fantastic. Bold.
Exciting. Beautiful.
This is a very different movie than Crouching Tiger, Hidden
Dragon, I understand why they are using that title in the
trailers, but this is not that movie with a twist.
Where the one is
dramatic, the other is exciting, the battles in Tiger were
mostly personal, while in Hero there are some epic battles that
you'll be talking about for some time. This is definitely
a movie that requires a group going from the theater to a good
bar or restaurant for a lively discussion.
Jet Li, whom I've liked since the
first time I saw him (Lethal Weapon 4) has finally gotten
another movie that let's him shine. While I enjoyed some
of his other movies, they just weren't more than time fillers.
They weren't very compelling, nor did they offer Li a chance to
show the depth he can bring to a character, as he showed us he
could with Wah Sing Ku (LW 4).
You'll love the moves, the battle
scenes, the weapons, and the other characters. The scenery
is spectacular; big and bold. The colors, costumes, each
tree, even a leaf, when specifically presented to you, are all
integral to this wonder-filled movie; they all conspire to tell
you the story.
Some films use a wide, open
landscape to wow you with the natural beauty of the setting.
And, China has plenty of that available. Some quiet,
thoughtful films use symbolism to an extreme that leaves you not
knowing what the hell is going on. Zhang Yimou, on
the other hand, incorporates nature into certain scenes (this
still to the right, for example) producing a profound visceral
effect that underscores the moment.
Don't miss it. This one is
