| I am astonished, officially, by
the brilliance that is PIXAR. I must admit, that as
excited as I was for The Incredibles – and I’ve been
dyin’ to see it – the animated short at the
beginning, Boundin’, kinda threw me. It was
cutesy, with a happy hippy message and frankly a
little like several descriptions I’ve read of acid
trips. |
| But then started what ended up
being one of the best animated films I have ever
seen, one of the best superhero films I have ever
seen, and one of the best films I have ever seen.
Seriously, literally and totally astonished was I. |
| Why, you ask? A fair
question. What makes the movie astonishing is the
seamless computer animation, unbelievable
choreography (I will explain), well-informed
superhero clichés, traditions, storylines, behaviors
and, well, superhero everything. Literally
everything. I have not one single issue with a
second of the film, and I kind of wish I did so this
didn’t come off as such a love letter to Disney, but if
any one deserves one, it’s PIXAR. |
|
Have you ever read The Watchmen
or Powers comics? It’s in here. Remember the old
Spidey, Superman, Batman, etc….Yeah, it’s in here.
Just like Prego spaghetti sauce, it’s in here. |
|
But it’s not just that.
There’s also the characters. More developed than
almost any other superhero flick with the possible
exceptions of Raimi’s Spiderman, Donner’s Superman,
and Shyamalan’s Unbreakable, The Incredible’s hands
us a truly believable superhuman family that we can
relate to on the most basic, Leave it to Beaver
level. Violet, the teenage girl, can turn
invisible, just like she believes she is to the boy
she likes. The super speedy boy, Dash, is a typical
ten year old… with the Flash’s ability. Mom,
Elastigirl, wants more than anything to keep her
family together in whatever way will best do the
job, and has mothering instinct out the wazoo. Mom
and Dad are sexually attracted to each other, have
arguments about raising the kids and have their
faults. Dad has an ego, and little boy side to
him. Mom can be a little too controlling. Violet
is a insecure as most other 14 year old girls and
Dash is as reckless and headstrong.

| I could go on, but I won’t.
It’s all here, and most important, it’s endlessly
entertaining, funny as heck, complete with several
VERY TENSE moments, violence, real good guys, real
evil bad guys, frank discussion of death, and again,
choreography of the animation that astounded me.
See the scene where Elastigirl is stuck in three
sets of doors and has to fight. This could have
fallen apart, but instead it might be my favorite
action moment of the movie. |
| Go see The Incredibles before
anything else. |
