Identity
by Marybeth
Solid
*Sigh* the wonder to sit through a film that features
frequent leading men John Cusack and Ray Liotta...but not quite
worth the $8 I spent...or I should say my boyfriend spent on the
ticket. "Identity" which came out this spring promised
to be a climactic thriller with an eerie twist...well I got the
twist alright. If the filmmakers were going for a shocker right
outta left field to really stun audiences a la Blair Witch
Project...well then they got what they asked for.
Unfortunately, however they didn't get the satisfied audience
part.
The setting is a stormy turned into flooded night in California
(where else right?) The first family we meet is changing a tire
on the shoulder of the highway in the middle of the downpour.
BAM! A limosine carrying driver John Cusack and a prima donna
starlet accidently hit the mother knocking her into a slight
coma. First surprise..very unexpected and totally grabbed me!
Excellent. John Cusack who seems to be more than just your
average chauffeur, immediately takes control leading everyone to
a cheap motel nearby. One by one, more people keep showing up at
the hotel until the flood ceases. Joining the group are varied B
actors including a call girl, the hotel manager,2 young newlyweds
fresh back from Vegas, the family from the crash a stepfather
comatose mother & young son of about 7,and Ray Liotta
playing a police investigator transporting a rather ominous
looking convict. Like Cusack's character,it is also evident that
Ray Liotta is more than he appears to be. Then things st!
art to unravel. The first to go is the bitchy starlet (I think
there was a nice satisfied sigh from the audience..we all knew
she'd be the first). Suddenly, swimming down the highway rather
than waiting to be killed is looking like a good idea to
everyone. Who is the killer? Automatically we are led to believe
it is the convict who has escaped from captivity...until of
course he's the next victim to be slaughtered. One by
one,everyone is killed...hit by a
truck, shot, stabbed, decapitated,or blown up in a car. They begin
to notice they all have the same birthday..May 10th. Maybe it's
because we learn they are all separate identities of a mental
patient on trial for murders that occurred years before on May
10th (OHHH!!! So THAT'S who that scary fat guy is being
interviewed..we kept wondering why the heck they kept switching
back to this guy!) |
Finally a predictable surprise tells us that Ray
Liotta is in fact a convict as well...so he must be the
killer..right? Sure...until he dies. So the hooker lives and she
goes off to start her new life...the crazy guy is sent to a
hospital. Until...she's visited by who else but the little boy
(who we all thought died in the car explosion) We see him attack
her as he says..."Whores dont get a second chance!!"
WHATTTT???!?!?! I dont know about anyone else but that was a
little too "Children of the Corn"-ish to me.
Overall,I say, watch it! The first hour is awesome and the
rest...Eh..then HUH?!
Do yourself a favor...watch out for the quiet short ones.... |
