Kate
& Leopold
by Mark Capitelli
Solid
Jeez Louise!
I would have NEVER expected to like this
film, but I did. It wasn’t the goofy, drippy, sapfest I expected at all.
I’m not saying it was amazing, but it was
a good, solid, generally well-conceived film.
Good performances were given by the entire
cast, the plot was entertaining, the quality of
the film was good, even the music and camera work
was sound.
Basically, the film is about
a 19th century New Yorker’s
accidental journey into modern time and his
resulting romance with a modern woman.
The idea was that old-world chivalry meets
modern-day practicality. The film is a romance, but there are also elements of science
fiction and it makes some interesting points
regarding modern sensibilities.
There were, of course, one or
two things that could have been handled more
carefully particularly where the film’s common
sense was concerned.
One character basically disappears for most
of the movie and no one even bothers to wonder
where he is!
Still, if you suspend a little disbelief
and go in with an open mind, you’ll probably
like this surprisingly intelligent romance.
It’s particularly good if you are looking
for a female-oriented film that a male sensibility
can accept (translation: good date film).
Bottom line: This film was a
pleasant surprise that both my girlfriend and I
could enjoy.
I highly recommend it for couples.
