At last....
by Joe De Matteo

Super

Well, I finally got to see a film I waited years to see, then gave up on.  I felt that they had to have screwed it up with all he company problems that surrounding the movie; I made the decision to skip Killshot, behind that.

Christian, however, broke down and rented the DVD, after watching it he told me I should see it.  It sat on the table for three days, before I put it in, then someone came over, and I took that for karma, and wrapped it up for mailing again.

But, it was bigger than me, I had to watch it…

It was good, the jerks should have put it in wide release, it deserved that.  In business, sometimes, as in life, one bad decision begets another.  And then there is bad timing, Winestein Company decided to go almost straight-to-DVD, had they gone wide release when they released the DVD, I believe they’d have made some money on this film, riding on the coattails of The Wrestler and Mickey Rourke’s popularity.

I’ve just see two excellent Mickey Rourke released in a row.

Dian Lane is excellent at the stout-hearted in life, but not in love heroine.

Killshot is a tightly told story, with the feel of The History of Violence of a hitman on the down side of his career, who runs headlong into a couple on the downside of their marriage.

I loved it, I’m ordering the DVD real quick.  You should, too.

Before and After: updates and previews

Hey,

Thought you guys might be interested. It's rare we get this kind of insight before the movie comes out. Usually you have to wait until a DTV (direct to video) release and watch commentary to find out about this kind of stuff:

Do note that the main money the Weinsteins have made this year came from my boy, Woody Allen, who many were already saying was done for.

January 2008 by Joe De Matteo

The powers that be over Killshot, a film I have been excitedly awaiting - for far too long, is now projecting  a release date of April 11, 2008.

Diane Lane, for me, is the perfect choice to portray Carman Colson, a woman who's life changes after she witnesses a murder and therefore is marked for death..  Ms. Lane has that hometown look to her, a beautiful woman who could be that real estate broker or restaurateur, and thereby makes her character someone we can believe in.

April 11th?  I'll buy the ticket, they just have to release a well edited worthy production.  (Though I'm hoping to see it sooner.)

December 2007 by Joe De Matteo

Another year has gone by, and I'm not so much "excited" about waiting for Killshot anymore.  There was a limited release back in May (2007), however the film is now showing a release date as the year 2008.  I cannot find any information as to why they are not releasing the film.  One can only guess that "they" are not happy with the finished product.  I have seen bits of it, and the trailers, which all look promising, but bits and pieces often have no relationship to the finished product.  It's like a friend excitedly describing a woman to you...and then you meet her.

So here is the lowdown: Killshot is in the can, or not; it looks good, but may not be; distribution is waiting for the exact right moment to release it, or they're desperately trying to get ride of it.  My question now is, "has Killshot suffered a kill-shot?"

August 2007 - Joe De Matteo

I've been watching this film's progression for two years.  My expectations have been a rollercoaster ride, and now I'm in a valley, but not the lowest valley to date.

March 2007 by Joe De Matteo

Yes, Killshot is still "in production.  And, I have to tell you once more, I am dieing to see this film: Mickey Rourke is my favorite bad guy; more importantly, Diane Lane and Rosario Dawson are two of my very favorite people to look at.

There is a trailer in limited release, I hope you've gotten a look at it.  It promises a non-stop ride of a movie.  Let's hope this is a promise not broken; I'll be really ticked off if it is.

December 2006 by Joe De Matteo

At this time there is no set release date other than "2007."  The film is still classified as "In Production," with only 2 stills released, however, go to the The Weinstein Company site and click on Coming Soon still of Killshot and see a scary photo of Mickey Rourke.

October 2006 by Joe De Matteo

There hasn't been much news about this film.  I've been worried that it was going to go nowhere as some film adaptations of Elmore Leonard books have.

However, I have a preview clip and it looks like all action, suspense and lots of tension. Mickey Rourke will have you looking over your shoulder for weeks.

I can't wait.

December 2005 by Joe De Matteo

It looks like Thomas Jane (last seen in Punisher) has replaced Viggo Mortensen as Wayne Colson, in this latest Elmore Leonard book to film.  And it also appears that Justin Timberlake is out as bad guy number 2.  I certainly welcome the beautiful and talented Rosario Dawson (Sin City, Rent) to the cast.  This is potentially a good thriller in the making.  I've got my eye on it and will report any notable changes or updates.

June 2005 by Joe De Matteo

Carmen (Diane Lane) and Wayne Colson have the misfortune of witnessing Mickey Rourke, the professional strong arm/hitman and Justin Timberlake, a the young stick up artist/killer, in an excessive shake down.  The couple goes into a flawed witness protection program and the story proceeds as most Elmore Leonard stories do.

While John Madden is not known for the Crime genre, he is an excellent director.  Madden has made some very beautiful films, like Captain Corelli's Mandolin, where the location is skillfully used to move the story along, this gives promises a more stylish Elmore Leonard picture  .

With John Madden directing this acting talent, I'm confident Killshot will be one of the best Elmore Leonard book-to-film productions ever.

This is a quote from John Horn, Los Angels Times taken from LATIMES.com's WORD OF MOUTH column

" Is 'Killshot' another Weinstein Co. misfire? The film has a great pedigree, but repeated delays in its release point to big problems.

By John Horn, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer October 2, 2008

THE "KILLSHOT" collaboration certainly looked intriguing on paper: John Madden, the director of best picture winner "Shakespeare in Love," adapting a colorful crime novel by Elmore Leonard, the author of "Get Shorty" and "Out of Sight," with Quentin Tarantino serving as executive producer.

Add screenwriter Hossein Amini ("The Wings of the Dove") and uncredited revisions by Oscar winners Sydney Pollack and Anthony Minghella, and what does "Killshot" add up to?

The way the Weinstein Co. sees it, a mess it has tried -- and failed -- to unload.

Although most recent news stories and blog posts about Harvey Weinstein's movie troubles have focused on the fate of Stephen Daldry's "The Reader," whose premiere date has sparked a feud between Weinstein and producer Scott Rudin, an equally compelling drama is unfolding around "Killshot," which was quietly pulled off next month's theatrical release schedule -- yet again.

It's at least the fifth time the movie, starring Diane Lane and Mickey Rourke, has been scheduled for release only to be pushed to a later date. As it now stands, "Killshot," which was filmed nearly three years ago and at one point looked as if it might be a direct-to-video release, likely will not come out until early 2009, the Weinstein Co. said Wednesday.

It's a startling outcome, given the film's pedigree, but just another dose of bad news for the Weinstein Co., which has struggled at the box office and seen half a dozen of the company's top executives leave (or announce their departure) in recent weeks.

Although Woody Allen's summer movie, "Vicky Cristina Barcelona," was a critical success and grossed more than $20 million for the Weinstein Co., the upstart studio's flops have outnumbered the hits. Among titles on this year's slate, Colin Farrell's "Cassandra's Dream," Norah Jones' "My Blueberry Nights" and the horror movie "Diary of the Dead" all grossed less than $1 million domestically.

As its movies have been disappearing at the multiplex, the Weinstein Co. has tried to sell several of its movies to other distributors, including "Killshot."

Earlier this spring at the Creative Artists Agency, "Killshot" was screened for what was billed as a showcase of its actors and filmmaking team but was also a sales event. And as has happened at other earlier sales screenings for "Killshot," there were no takers for the film's domestic distribution rights.

"Killshot" is a drama featuring a couple (Lane and Thomas Jane) in a witness protection program being pursued by a couple of bad guys (Rourke and Joseph Gordon-Levitt).

The movie dates to the mid-1990s at Miramax Films, when brothers Harvey and Bob Weinstein ran the division of the Walt Disney Co. One early incarnation had Tony Scott ("Man on Fire") directing Robert De Niro and Tarantino as the bad guys, with Bruce Willis and Uma Thurman as the married couple.

The film was later assigned to Madden, who won Miramax the best picture Oscar with 1998's "Shakespeare in Love," which upset "Saving Private Ryan" for the top Academy Award.

When the Weinsteins left Miramax in 2005, they brought with them to their new Weinstein Co. several movie projects, including "Killshot."

At that year's Cannes Film Festival, a potential cast for the film -- then including Rourke and Lane -- was revealed.

Director Madden, who also directed "Proof" and "Captain Corelli's Mandolin," met with distributors. By October 2005, production was underway in Toronto, and the Weinstein Co. announced that "Killshot" would arrive in March 2006.

It never did.

As part of its distribution deal with MGM, the Weinstein Co. scheduled the film for release in September 2006, then October 2006, then a date to be determined in 2006 before it removed "Killshot" from the schedule entirely. "Killshot" reappeared on the MGM schedule late this summer with a Nov. 7 premiere, and then that date too was scrapped.

Last week, the Weinstein Co. and MGM terminated their alliance three months before it was scheduled to end. MGM will still release two Weinstein Co. films -- "Soul Men" and "Hurricane Season" -- later this year, with the Weinstein Co. now taking back all of the other titles that had been penciled into MGM's slate, including "Zack and Miri Make a Porno" and "The Road."

At some point well after completion of its original filming, "Killshot" went back for reshoots, with uncredited writing and other assistance from Minghella and Pollack, both of whom have since died.

People who have worked on the film hope that "Killshot" might ultimately mimic the performance of "Hero." Miramax acquired that Chinese action movie soon after it premiered in Asia in 2002, but the film sat on the shelf until August 2004.

"Hero" was greeted with fantastic reviews and grossed more than $53 million.

Steve Bunnell, the distribution chief for the Weinstein Co., says the studio hopes the critical accolades for Rourke's "The Wrestler," which Fox Searchlight is releasing Dec. 19, may help "Killshot." "Mickey Rourke is really good in the film," Bunnell says of "Killshot."

"I think the movie is really strong," adds "Killshot's" producer, Richard Gladstein. "I'd love to see the movie come out, and I think audiences will like it. John Madden is an incredible director." "
