Good Knight’s Tail
by Michael Flanagan

Solid

I went into A Knight’s Tale not expecting much.  Perhaps that is why I enjoyed it so much.  An ancient mathematician once said that the expectation of the failure of a film is inversely proportional to the enjoyment of said film.  Whether this is the case or not, Knight’s Tale is a really enjoyable movie.

Don’t be fooled by the medieval look.  This movie, starring the charismatic up-and-coming Heath Ledger, begins with Queen’s “We Will Rock You,” not just as background music, but with audience participation.  Yes, that’s right, the medieval tournament-watchers are hitting the medieval fences with their medieval hands to the beat of “dam dum CLAP, dam dum CLAP.”  Fortunately, this is about as extreme as the film gets in that direction.  It serves as an introduction, saying, “Get rid of your expectations, this one’s going to be different.”

And different it is.  The people speak modern-day dialogue, eloquently mixed with neo-Shakespearean poetry.  Humor mixes in slapstick comedy and plays-on-words.  The royalty dances in elegant steps, and modern choreography.  Women act as modern women, supporters of equality of the genders, and they don’t shy away from an occasional romp in a knight’s tent.  The people paint their faces in the shapes of the knights’ crests, much like the sporting event attendees of today.

And somehow, through all this, it achieves a perfect balance, creating a likeable tone amidst what should be utter chaos.  It has the stories and gimmicks of Geoffery Chaucer.  It shows a detestable villain, heinously played by name.  It shows a love story, complete with boy meeting girl, losing girl, and, well, I wouldn’t want to give away the ending.  I will say, however, that A Knight’s Tale is a great family film, date movie, buddy movie, and an altogether good story that leaves plenty of growing room for cast and crew alike.

This Movie is a great tale of love, action and suspence. A great movie to watch over an over for sure. This movie keeps it's Audiance captured with its ability to change the subject and suprise anyone in the mood to enjoy a drama.

Filmaking rarely goes as far as making somthing one would watch again and again. This also keeps a sence of it's setting while featuring some of the greatest songs gracing our generation.
