Long Riders, long on a
lot of things

It's obvious that Walter Hill, Stacy & James Keach, the
other writers, Steven Smith, Bill Bryden, and everyone else with
anything to say in this movie wanted to make a memorable, multi
dimensional film. A big task, but they succeed. The
character development is so strong at times it touches the
border of too much. Combined with the wonderful cinematography,
certain scenes are almost like watching one of those artsy,
English movies.
For my taste the
pay off comes in other scenes when the grand pictures created by
the excellent camera work perfectly show the magnitude of the
situations these strong, super-real characters move
themselves in and out of. Whether in a small dark
room, lit by gas lamps or in great open spaces on sunny days,
each character is vivacious enough to carry the scene and keep
the plot and subplots moving along. You are always aware
of the complexity that makes up the personality of a person who,
in order to survive and prosper, has to take what they want,
whether it's crops from the ground, news to pass on, or money
from a vault. Here is another western like Butch Cassidy
and the Sundance Kid, and The Wild Bunch that brings out the
importance of DVD quality in home viewing; Only the big screen
at the theater is better. |

The concept of using brothers to portray these historical outlaw
brothers greatly adds to the believability of this film.
Especially in the emotional scenes where men are wounded, or
taking sides in debate or argument. On the video packaging
the men get the top billing, as they should since it's their
story being told, but some of the female performances are just
as powerful. Belle Starr, Pamela Reed, is as intense a
character as Frank James. |

| sleazy and as self-centered as the
woman in the old poem the woman and the lion, Belle throws Cole
Younger and her husband into deadly battle, just for
entertainment. And Cole, true to the hero of the poem, who
retrieve the glove of the self-absorbed beauty from the lion
pit, only to leave her, fights the fight and goes on his way.
This
DVD belongs on the shelf of any self respecting movie
