It’s
no Swingers, but…: Made
by Christian De Matteo
Solid
I bought this because it was rather
cheap and I had wanted to see in theaters but had missed it.
I like owning DVDs, so I figured, what the heck?
End result:
It’s a’ight.
More serious than I expected, Made
is a crime story about two friends (Vaughn in the exact same
part as his Swingers part, Favreau in a completely
different part) who are trying to make their way into a crime
organization. Well, Bobby (Favreau) is, while Ricky (Vaughn) is
doing what he always does and following Bobby around.
Astoundingly annoying, Ricky is already in the bad graces of
crime boss Max (Peter Falk, in a fun, wonderful performance),
when the two friends are sent on a fully funded trip to New York
to help out crime boss P. Diddy in another fine performance (see
Monster’s Ball).
The movie is oddly serious, with a weirdly
touching storyline between Bobby and his stripper girlfriend
(played by the wonderful in so many ways Famke Janssen) and her
daughter that goes in a nicely, non-Hollywood way.
Don’t watch this expecting the
uncomfortable laugh-out-loud hysterics of Swingers, or
the violence of a Goodfellas.
It’s neither. It is a good story of two friends (one a complete and utter
jackass) getting involved in a crime and trying to survive with
some funny stuff happening, some dramatic stuff and some very
touching stuff.
All in all, an enjoyable, well made
movie. But it’s
no Swingers. |
