Sandler
Does a Good Deed
by Michael Flanagan
Super
Mr. Deeds is funnier than it looks…but
only if you’re an Adam Sandler fan.
Sandler does nothing in this movie that he’s never done before,
but he makes it fresh, funny, and enjoyable.
He’s likeable, nice, but not naïve, as one would expect from
this setup. He beats people
up, which is a good way to get away from cliché.
And, believe it or not, he gets a girl in New York City.
Of course, he also gets 40 billion dollars, but we won’t weigh
this down with connections and politics, and just assume that Winona
Ryder would fall in love with Adam Sandler.
Which could happen!
John Turturro.
Perfect use of an actor by director Steven Brill.
Turturro steals each scene he’s in.
He doesn’t just steal it, he steals it, knocks out the owner,
and runs down the street screaming.
Turturro with an accent always gets me.
This character is like a nice version of The Jesus, except
instead of a bowler, he’s a butler. And he’s funny as hell.
Mr. Deeds doesn’t rely on plausibility,
but entertainment. It takes
old jokes and plots and makes them new, fresh, and Adam Sandlery. If the audience shows up of the opinion that Sandler
couldn’t entertain his way out of a burlap sack, it will take a lot to
lean them in another direction. But
if you show up willing to see an old-fashioned comedic love and money
story and laugh…a lot…then enjoy.
And pay close attention to the scene when Sandler
and the gang stop at Wendy’s. The
helicopter sits in the lot in the foreground, and in the background are
a group of stores, white brick and green writing.
That’s Putnam Plaza in Carmel, New York, my current town of
residence. I used to
collect carts from the very place the copter is parked.
See this movie for that, if nothing else.
Yes, I’m serious. Why?
