| Mystic
River plays out like a downhill sled race. It begins
at the top, with powerful storytelling and captivating
characters. Then, it begins to go steadily downhill.
The dramatic tension of the film spews out like a tire
releasing air. The characters become less believable as
the plot becomes more convoluted. Only the police side
of the case, played really well by Kevin Bacon, and kind of
well by Lawrence Fishburne, seemed to keep any weight in the
movie.
Tim Robbins works to win his Oscar in this one, completely
disappearing into character and doing laps around Sean Penn's
good-but-adequate-because-he's-acting-like-himself
performance.
And then, the ending. In the last five minutes or so
of the film, something weird happens. I'll confess, I
don't completely understand it. But it involves Laura
Linney losing her freaking mind and Kevin Bacon doing a finger
point. This ending is so irrelevant to what has been
established that it pulls you out of Mystic River and
throws you into The Godfather. And Part II. |
