I
Want My Mummy
by
Michael Flanagan
Super
When
I sat down to watch The Mummy in 1999
on home video, I expected to pass two hours
of my life mocking a ridiculous film that I
would quickly forget.
Instead, I sat ensconced completely
in pure happiness, joyfully entertained by a
wonderful old-fashioned modern day
adventure.
Director
Stephen Sommers knows his source material in
this remake of the horror classic, and he
mocks that material successfully.
Instead of remaking a horror film
that people would always say, “doesn’t
have the magic of the original,” he
created a satire in the tradition of Indiana
Jones, with Brendan Fraser perfectly cast as
Rick O’Connel (Indy).
The film is perfectly
tongue-in-cheek.
For instance, when the mummy is
mentioned, a breeze blows through the desert
camp and Fraser remarks, “that happens a
lot around here.”
And,
The Mummy has a romance, a plague, a
funny sidekick, a sleazy villain, booby
traps, bugs, bugs, more bugs, and, of
course, lots of mummies.
All juggled in perfect balance and
ease by the entire cast and crew.
Most importantly, everyone looks like
they’re having a good time, always a sign
of a great movie.
A surprise, to be sure, but a good
one, and a permanent addition to my
collection.
DVD Update
The
Mummy Ultimate Collection DVD
is a must-have.
It replaced my video very quickly,
and was well worth the reasonable price.
The two-disc DVD contains three
commentaries, all very interesting and
entertaining, especially Brendan Frasier’s,
who makes you feel like he’s in the room
laughing at the movie with you.
He also tells the “true story” of
how he almost died in the hanging scene.
Also
on the discs are deleted scenes,
documentaries, trailers, and scenes and
trailers from the sequel, The Mummy
Returns.
Presented in anamorphic format, the
DVD looks great, sounds great, and belongs
in a museum.
Well, maybe not, but definitely in a
personal collection.
DVD Rating: Super.
