"Napoleon Dynamite" is the kind of movie that makes some people
laugh until they cry, and some people not believe they spent
good money for such a boring, unfunny film. The words that come
to mind are "one man's trash is another man's treasure." Whether
you will like this film depends on how willing you are to laugh
at those more unfortunate than you.
The movie centers around a sleepy farming town in Idaho where
Napoleon, a tall, awkward high school student who sports a a
light brown 'fro, big glasses, and moonboots lives. His eyes are
always squinted, almost shut completely, as if the sun is
blinding him all day. He lives with his also bespectacled
brother Kip and manly Grandma, though his sleazy, scheming Uncle
Rico takes care of him and Kip when Grandma breaks her cocyx in
an accident. He seems to have no friends until he meets Pedro, a
moustached kid of Mexican descent who starts going to Napoleons
high school. Along the way, he also befriends Deb, a ponytailed
shy girl. Eventually, Napoleon helps Pedro try to run in the
school elections, but overall the movie feels more like a series
of hilarious skits with a vaugue plot than a true movie held
together by strong themes. This actually works, once again,
depending on if you are willing to laugh at the things Napoleon
says and does, things that aren't really supposed to!
be funny. Most of the people who disliked this movie say it is
cruel to the "nerdy" characters and their awkward actions that
the audience laughs at. But the makers of this film are actually
showing sympathy towards the characters, and much of the film is
just the truth, taken from the writer's childhood experiences.
If you have a broad sense of humor and see this movie with that
in mind, Napoleon Dynamite may make you laugh till you can't
laugh no more.
