This
series is truly one of the best that anime has to offer.
The characters are great the mecha (if you can call them that)
look great, and the fight scenes are suspenseful and
intense. Unfortunately, this series suffers from the
Achilles' heel of most anime: it strives too hard to make
itself something more than it should've in a psycho-spiritual
realm.
What
the heck is Mark talking about? Well, I'll tell
you. Throughout the series there are allusions to
Christian spiritualism that never really go anywhere
significant (beyond the obvious apocalyptic do-ha). They
also dive into the psychology of a teenage boy (never a good
idea) and his issues with self-confidence. They attempt
to tie those two elements together with the very sci-fi plot
that has been going on through the whole show.
The result of this blunder is a bizarre ending that manages
to confuse the viewer to the point that he/she has no idea
what's going on. The worst part is that it manages to do
this for more than three episodes (too long a time to be
bewildered).
It really is a damn shame. This is one
of my favorite anime series. It would have been
unbelievably good if not for the attempt to bite off more than
it could chew.
Nevertheless, this is a GREAT series that I
highly recommend to anime fans. I own the Perfect
Collection and I cherish it.
