Tremors:
B That’s A Plus
by Michael Flanagan
Super
Okay, from time
to time a bad movie is just to good to
be bad.
Such is the case with Tremors.
Sure, it’s B-plot rears its
head more often than those blind,
underground-dwelling worm things, but
it’s all in good fun.
In the case of a movie like
this, fun is the key.
First, you have
great characters. Kevin Bacon provides some great country boy idiot humor as
he’s running away, trying not to get
swallowed.
And let’s not forget
TV-Movie-of-the-Week King Mr. Michael
Gross.
In this, the loyal patriarch of
“Family Ties” has an arsenal that
would make the jaw of Charleton Heston
himself drop to the ground and get
ripped away by a worm.
And Gross’ gun-toting wife is
aptly played by Annie Oakley herself,
Reba McEntire.
She puts so much natural
southern kick-butt charm into her role
that you instantly forget that she’s
actually a wealthy megastar country
singer.
And the supporting cast is
chock full of people you might
recognize (hint: There’s a little
big trouble in little tremors.)
But look quickly, because
before you have a chance to identify
them, they’re sucked into the jowls
of hellish dirt-beasts from space…or
the past…or the future…or the
center of the earth…or Taiwan.
The
well-assembled cast of characters
coupled with a witty and entertaining
screenplay overshadows the inherent
B-ness of it all.
When a station wagon backs into
the ground headlights up, and
two people find it two days latter by
hearing oldies on the radio, you
can’t help but chuckle and
wonder…is that rattling in the
kitchen the refrigerator…or
something else?
