High
Plains Drifter
by Dr. Smac
HUGE
One of the top 3 films in
Clint Eastwood's career. In High Plains
Drifter, he both stars and directs. He is
"The Stranger" or "The
Gunman", but we never learn his name.
The look on his face when he first comes to
town and hears a whip crack pre-shadows the
fact that he is some kind of supernatural
avenger for a marshall who was murdered in
this town (his ghost perhaps?) - a murder in
which the townspeople were complicit. As
"The Stranger", he exacts revenge
on both the murderers and the whimpy,
duplicitous townsfolk. They once again fear
the murderous ex-cons, who are returning to
town for more trouble, so "The
Stranger" helps them prepare to defeat
them. But, again, his lessons are for
everyone - not just the murderers. Lots of
good one-liners, tongue-in-cheeck comedy,
tough squinty looks, Clint-cigarillos, and
macho fun for everyone.
