Reviews:
Run,
Chicken Run
by Michael Flanagan
HUGE
(and extra crispy)
In the year
2000, one of the bravest, most
emotionally packed powerhouse film
of the year wasn’t even
nominated for an Oscar™.
(Pause to let the silence
signifying “DUH” pass.)
Chicken Run, a
brilliant take off of war escape
movies like Stalag 17 and The
Great Escape, contains the
kind of enhanced energy that most
live-action movies lack today.
(rant) If
these claymated Chickens can pack
an emotional wallop with a need to
run combined with a love story,
then why have we not seen real
people doing this on screen for
years?
The only way to enjoy this
kind of film is to watch
non-Disney animation and catch all
the private gags!
What wrong with the
moviemakers? (end rant)
Chicken
Run’s characters are
absolutely brilliant in their
humanity as chickens.
Most of them ain’t to
bright (Babs: Were you on holiday? Ginger: No, I wasn’t on holiday, I was in solitary
confinement.
Babs: It’s good to get
some time to yourself, then.), but
all of them have heart.
The cast is mostly British,
with one Scott, and an American,
bravely voiced by Mel Gibson.
Mel Gibson barely acted a
day with his co-stars, yet
there’s more onscreen chemistry
between Rocky the Rooster and
Ginger the trapped chicken than
there has been in years.
The
characters and filmmakers bring a
great story of love, escape, and
hope to the big screen and show
that humanity can triumph over the
struggle to endure.
And they do some great pie
in the face jokes, too.
