Gettysburg
by

HUGE
Following on
the heels of the pathetic historical soap
opera Ironclads, one might not have
expected Gettysburg to be one of the
best war movies ever made, yet it is
arguably the best Civil War movie ever
filmed.
The movie faithfully follows the
historical novel, "The Killer
Angels," almost word for word, and
doesn't trash it up with nonsensical
romances.
Filmed on location, and using over
5,000 reinactors in the battle scenes lends
the film an authenticity other civil war
movies lack.
Unlike Gone With The Wind,
where the Civil War was just something doing
on in the background of a tawdry romance, in
Gettysburg, the battle IS the story.
The movie was so enthralling that the
4+ hours went by so quickly I didn't realize
how long the movie was.
The movie was later shown on TV in an
expanded version, but the scenes deleted
from the theatrical release do little to add
to the drama, and, in fact slow the story
down and are not up to the quality of the
rest of the film, which explains why they
were cut.
Gettysburg has been released
in the theatrical version and long versions
in both laserdisc and VCR format and is now
on DVD.
It is as must have for history buffs,
war movie fans, or viewers interested in the
Civil War.
