They
Came, They Saw… then They Came Again: Ghostbusters
2
by Christian De Matteo
Solid
A true rarity is it when a sequel is better than the
first, or even just as good.
Have no illusions, Ghostbusters
2 ain’t that rarity.
What it is, however, is an excellent sequel
that has fun at its own expense, maintains the
originality of the first, and guarantees a damn good
time.
I write this review after marathoning both Ghostbusters
movies for direct comparison.
In my memory, I remembered feeling that Ghostbusters
2 was a little dumb.
It is. But
perfectly.
After beginning with what might qualify as the most
depressing sequel character re-introduction in history
(right up there with Willis’s drunken and separated
return in Diehard
with a Vengeance) the movie takes off.
The plot:
A disbanded Ghostbusters must reunite to fight angry ooze that feeds off
the bad vibes in New York City.
Come on, how can that not be funny?
It is.
Truly worthy of its predecessor, Ghostbusters
2 is filled with quintessential Murray, Ramis,
Ackroyd and Moranis moments providing the audience
with one in-character gag after another. Even Ramis gets a little silly.
Watch it, enjoy it and don’t expect the first one
again. You
won’t be disappointed.
