Carey’s
Return to his Roots: Me, Myself & Irene
by
Christian De Matteo
Solid
After Man on
the Moon bombed for reasons I’ll never
understand, and after having already been ignored
by the Oscars for his turn in The
Truman Show (which I think
was good, but I was drunk at the time), Jim Carey
turned to the Farrelly brothers for his all out
return to outrageous comedy.
And a fine turn it is.
Working with Renee Zellweger (Bridget Jones’ Diary, Empire Records), the plot involves a
cuckolded cop turned pushover nice guy who finally
flips out, releasing his rage in the form of
another personality.
That’s right, Jim Carey as a schizo.
Talk about comic possibility.
And Carey grabs onto it with two hands.
From his hysterical transformations to his
ridiculous rage-driven antics, to his nice guy
jealousy of his other personality, he takes full
advantage of the comedic vehicle.
Zellweger works pretty well off of him, at
times a bit obvious as the straight man, but
frequently contributing her own funny moments.
The only unfortunate element is that the movie
suffers from the Farrelly brothers curse: long
lulls between major gross-out laughs.
While the movie is very worth seeing and
even rewatching for some hysterical moments (I
bought it cheap on DVD), like the Farrelly’s There’s
Something about Mary, the middle drags a tad,
with cute bids mixed in.
But just a bit of the middle.
Otherwise, the plot moves along well with a lot of
very funny moments just in the conversation of his
three black sons and a cow.
With the addition of a very bizarre morning
after, hand lotion and some excellent one-liners
by Hank (Carey’s evil alter ego), Irene
is a great gross romp and fun light watch.
