I like John Woo
by Joseph De Matteo

Super

I like John Woo and I like Chow Yun-Fat, too, and maybe that's why I like this movie in spite of the fact that it is not in English.  I hate subtitles!  But the film has enough action for me to enjoy it.

I've heard some people complain that it's silly.  Not a word one would associate with a Woo movie, but this is a light comedy.  You might say it's a twist on Oliver Twist, but with the main story about adults.

I enjoyed it, and after 3 viewings give it a Super and proudly place it in my John Woo collection.

This movie will show you just what a range in the acting spectrum Chow Yun-Fat has.  Compare this performance with Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, you'll be amazed.

I can understand why people compare him to Cary Grant, but can you picture Cary Grant playing John Lee in Antoine Fuqua's Replacement Killers?  I can't.

In the only Cary Grant Thriller that comes to mind, Charade if you replace Cary Grant with almost any of his contemporaries, you'd have a totally different movie; his light comedic personality is so strong.  To a lesser degree you could say the same about North by Northwest, but Hitchcock over shadows everything and everyone in all of his movies, therefore it's not a fair comparison.  Grant in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon would have be less deep, less moving, less memorable.  Chow Yun-Fat is far more versatile in my opinion.
