Orange
You Glad You Watched This Movie?
by Michael Flanagan
Super
On occasion, I'll rent a movie because I'm
pretty sure I won't like it, or will only like it
marginally. This is done on days when I
don't feel like being weighed down by drama,
performance, quality, or acting. Most often
it is a stupid comedy. This is what I
thought I was doing with Ornage County.
Instead, as happens on an even rarer occasion, I
was surprised by the smarts of this film.
The movie is funny in all the right spaces, as
lead by Colin Hanks and Jack Black. Both are
extremely smart comedy performers, and both play
off of each other well. The plot brings them
into situations from several other movies and
books, but it makes it fresh, and because you know
what's coming, it's even funnier, if not
miserable. For instance, the scene where
Garry Marshall comes to interview Hanks for
Stanford University, and everything goes
wrong--perfect clichéd brilliance.
The other performances in this movie add to its
comic perfection. John Lithgow, Catherine
O'Hara, Ben Stiller, Chevy Chase, and the great
Lily Tomlin added to the chemistry of Orange
County. It's not the greatest comedy
ever made, but it's wild entertainment, as well as
smart and fun.
