Absolutely Stunning
by Joe De Matteo
HUGE
|
| This is one that will stay with you for some time to
come. Oldboy is a brilliant thriller that starts off
like a farce, then runs right past bewildering, ending
up far to the other side of shocking. Oh Dae-Su, a
philandering good old boy, arrested for drunken behavior
or some such is making a fool of himself in the local
police station. He's been clutching his young daughter's
birthday present in his hands, a pair of fluffy angle
wings, and making a fool of himself. But he's
saved from the police by his good friend, only to end up
in a situation that must have Alfred Hitchcock jumping
for joy.
Chan-wook Park has done such a masterful job that
after a short period of time, you may, as I did, get so
caught up in things unfolding, that you forget that
you're watching a foreign film. |
|
| I refuse to say anymore about the story,
it is so much better to let it unfold. Just know that it
will take you places you will never expect, and it will
do that again, and again and again. There is one fight
scene in particular, the impossibility of which may just
escape you because of the way it is filmed;
Another must for your action DVD collection.
