Super
There hasn’t been a gathering like this in our lifetime,” boasts
Captain Barbosa referring to the rogue assembly of buccaneers in
Gore Verbinski’s action packed threequel Pirates of the Caribbean:
At World’s End. It could well have been titled “Pirates of the World
Unite.” Whereas Curse of the Black Pearl and Dead Man’s Chest may
have given you the impression that “Captain” Jack Sparrow was the
only pirate on this earth, At World’s End resonates with all
genders, colors and nationalities.“ |
| Tom Hollander’s Lord Cutler Becket shares center stage with the
principles in a pivotal role, a ruthless heavy bent on eradicating
all pirates and their advocates. His contempt is portrayed in the
gruesome opening where mass punishment is meted out to all ages
guilty of piracy or aiding and abetting . Before this, there is a
proclamation suspending certain rights that would make some
supporters of the Patriot Act proud. Ironically, he even forms an
alliance with a certain captain to help him in his efforts. With a
running time over 2 ½ hours, Pirates 3 felt shorter than it’s
predecessors simply because of it’s fast pace, sporting few dull
moments. It actually reminded me of Ang Lee’s Hulk taking a full
forty minutes to launch the action, yet engaging me while I waited.
And when Jack finally appeared, it was more a sense of relief rather
than impatience.
Despite Jack Sparrow’s rougish duplicity toward nearly everyone
he knows, you can’t help but to like him. And to have anyone except
Johnny Depp in his boots would be like sailing the Black Pearl off
the edge of a giant waterfall. Jack hasn’t changed a bit. He
maintains that amusing, effeminate swagger that I don’t find that
offensive because it’s compensated by his cleverness and sword
fighting skills. Whatever he does, you can be sure it’s to suit his
own purposes. |

| After a talk with his attorneys and recovery
from a brutal head injury in Fiji, Rolling Stones guitarist Keith
Richards made Depp’s fondest dream a reality by playing rough hewn
Captain Teague, Jack Sparrows’ father. I was overjoyed by his being
in the film a lot longer than I expected. Teague is, ostensibly, the
impressario; the one all other pirates look up to for interpreting
the sacred Pirates Code. With every minute gesture and facial tick,
Richards has no problem convincing anyone of his superior status. He
more than nails the role. Exceptional Asian thesp Chow Yun-Fat is
on board as Singapore buccaneer SoaFeng. Other than Richards, he is
the most prominent of newcomers with a distrustful attitude towards
those who would like an audience with him. It quickly becomes
apparent that he and Jack have had a not to favorable past. Feng
hates him and wants him dead.
Orlando Bloom’s Will Turner surprised me most of all, expressing
a “Jack Sparrowesque trait I’m sure most of the audience could
scarcely believe. His motives may confuse you at first, but you’re
always willing to accept them since he’s still in love with
Elizabeth Swann.
Scripters Ted Elliot and Terry Rossio know the importance of
consistency in a winning franchise ,bringing in new elements that
enhance, not dampen, the spirit of the ongoing story. ( I.e- Barbosa
returning from the dead and a rip roaring ocean battle in the midst
of a swirling whirlpool) They also bring more depth to Keira
Knightley’s Swann, Naomie Harris’Tia Dalma and Bill Nighy’s ruthless
Davey Jones. The only problem for some will be the multitude of
plotlines that certainly weren’t there in Pirates 1 or 2.
Visual fx by Industrial Light & Magic, highlighted by Hans
Zimmer’s valiant score, are superb as always. While you’re enjoying
them please, please, please( I hope I’ve said that enough) remember
to stay after the credits roll for one last scene that has nothing
to do with fx or music, but you’ll still be glad you waited.

Lots of swashbuckling action and fun in At World's End, Pirate
fans will not be disappointed. |
| The full crew is back to entertain you and keep you
at the edge of your seat during this incredible adventure.
Jack's father (Rolling Stoner Keith Richards, Johnny's inspiration
for the Jack Sparrow character) shows up in a very entertaining
visit.
There are more than enough situations that develop to keep the
most ADD of us interested and entertained. My personal opinion is
that the trailer use of the Black Pearl and crew traveling
underwater would have been an exciting surprise for unknowing film
goers. But there a more, little brother, there are more (as
said to Antonio Banderas by Dennis Storhøi in
The 13th Warior. |

April 9, 2007 - Joe De Matteo
Last week Rolling Stoner Keith Richards told a NME,
the British music tabloid, that... well, here is
what he said: "The strangest thing I've tried to
snort? My father. I snorted my father. He was
cremated and I couldn't resist grinding him up with
a little bit of blow.
"My dad wouldn't have cared, he didn't give a shit. It
went down pretty well, and I'm still alive."
AN ASIDE: This, in
itself is great stuff. I was, you should know,
one of those teens who, way back when people were
either Beatle fans or Stone fans, a Stones' fan.
I was a Rolling Stone fan from the moment I got to
really know each band. The Beatles were too
commercial, even bubble gum on occasion, but the
Stones were always Rock and Roll. And,
personally, I know it's only Rock 'n Roll, but I
like it.
BACK ON TRACK: Funny
story, right? It's even entertaining to a
non-gossip person, like myself. But, it's
obviously the wrong kind of story for the Disney
studios. With the release date of May 25,
2007, Disney publicists are behind the eight ball,
which is the Richards interview; and right on the
eve of the release and preceding ad campaign.
This will be a hard pill
to swallow, but swallow it, they must.
Richards did the kind of thing that no one should be
surprised about. One outcome may be that
Richards appearance will be cut from the theatrical
release, only to be included in an extended DVD
edition.

NME's Keith Richards interview
Here's a taste:
The actor I'd most like to play me in a film is...
Johnny Depp
"Johnny and I had a great time, loads of fun. I
expected [filming the third 'Pirates Of The
Carribean' movie, 'At World's End'] to be fun but it
was even more fun than I had imagined. I was driving
through the driveway to Walt Disney studios the
other day thinking,... ...I'm following in the
footsteps of Mickey Mouse here.' No, it..." Read the
complete article on NME.com, it is marvelous. |
