By Angelica

But first I must
explain:
Angelica has sent in many, many reviews. Some 6 or 9
paragraphs, some, as small as this one. I wrote her some time
back, and asked her to write in English, but she never has.
I have no idea what she says here, I hope it is worthy. I
published it because of her tenacity. Joe De Matteo |

HUGE yo

Breaking
the Disney Curse of the Black box office scores: Pirates of the Caribbean
|
|
Back in the day, when I was young (I’m not a kid
anymore), Disney used to make some pretty good fare.
The cartoons were the best, bar none, and even their
kids’ movies were fun and entertaining, The Apple Dumpling Gang, Herbie,
Blackbeard,Condor-Man, etc….
Heck, think back a few years and remember that
Disney’s Legend of Sleep Hollow was the standard by
which most people compared Tim Burton’s (and Johnny “I can
pull off any freaking acting job in the world” Depp) Sleepy
Hollow. Things
however, change, and now Disney films are mostly regarded as
trite parent torture (Hey, let’s remake The Parent Trap…
again) that kids quickly outgrow.
Up until about a week ago, the firm belief was that Pixar
was Disney’s only hope and even they were threatening
to leave the Mouse House. |

"Depp... played his Captain Jack Sparrow like a seafaring
Keith Richards." |
Perhaps a sign of things to come, the Pirates of the
Caribbean has managed to steal Disney a number one box
office seat, sans computer-animated creativity.
Now, had The Haunted Mansion had been advertised
first, I would have said this feat a complete impossibility (as
I did when I first heard the concept – movie based on a theme
park ride- of Pirates).
Now, I wonder if even Murphy’s Mansion has a
decent shot. |
|
The strength of Pirates is its combining of old Disney
humor with modern technology (and, like all fancy filmmakers who
know, they too used Lucas’ Industrial Light and Magic for
their special effects), giving kicking graphics to a
funny-as-hell script. But,
as I type, I realize, I forget the other key ingredient.
While the script was well-crafted in dialogue, smartly
acknowledging of old clichés, and rather tightly plotted, and
while the special effects were, in fact, flawless (and I’ve
seen it twice mind you - no mistakes) with incredible creature
transformations and beautifully executed boat battles, all of
this would have fallen flat on its face without great casting. |
|
Pirates does not have great casting:
The casting is PERFECT.
So good is the casting that when I first heard the list
of actors, I assumed they were all looking for an easy paycheck
by slumming it. How
could modern Disney get Johnny Depp, Geoffrey Rush, Jonathan
Pryce and Orlando Bloom, in the same stupid flick based
on a damned Disney ride? Well,
had I read the script then and known Gore Verbinski (The Ring)
was slated to direct, I would have been less surprised.
Still, without this caliber cast, the film would have
been much more like… Renny Harlin’s major tank of a pirate
film starring Matthew Modine and Gina Davis: Cutthroat Island. |
|
Depp, as he has said in interviews, pictured Pirates as
rock stars and played his Captain Jack Sparrow like a seafaring
Keith Richards. Perfect.
Rush has so much fun as a villain that you can’t help
but cheer every cruel, awful, scoundrel step he takes.
Pryce is perfectly repressed, suppressed and snobby…
the perfect Shakespearean relationship blocker.
And Bloom… ah, yes, Legolas to most Lord of the Rings
fans, was born to buckle swashes (I know, I know, but I thought
I’d try), proves his acting prowess with sword now as well as
bow. A star-crossed
lover with a history, a chip on his shoulder, and a deep-rooted
love, Bloom manages to embody them all in a performance still
damn funny. |

|
Pirates of the Caribbean is a thrill-ride in the
tradition of the great summer thrill rides.
A film one could hypothetically see twice in three days
and love even more the second time.
This is what a great summer film is supposed to be, and
what a shock it came from Disney.
Perhaps they finally thawed out old Walt and he smacked
some executives around or maybe someone just took a few hours in
their video library and remembered what had put the Mouse House
on top… back in the day. |

Since the day I saw the trailer in the theater, I felt in my gut that this
film would be on hell of a ride. In my oppinion this movie embodied
the true spirit of the sea, the esscence of what it is like to be a pirate and
tied things up perfectly with some modern technology to make things that much
more mystical. Being that I grew up on the water I have always had
a fondness for sea going adventure stories. "Pirates" was
just so much fun to watch. It was swashbuckling and slapstick all
in one..."but why the rum...?" The script writing was incredible. Each
character had there distinct personality, and there own agenda. wheather
it be to rid themsleves of the curse, get there ship, or save the
girl.(although sparrow played both sides of the fence to suite himself...loved
it) You can hype all you want about any character in the film, but
all I can say is Johnny Depp. I never really liked the guy, but his
perfomance in "pirates" made me a believer. God he was
awesome! |
|
I never would have thought of Pirates being the Keith Richardss of yesteryear. One
thing I did wish would have been included would have been a little bit more
historical fact, or something significant of the time to say "i didnt
know they did that back then" SOMETHING!! Again though all and
all this movie rocked, and made me feel like I was in on the action. |
