There are a lot of movies that come and go
with little fanfare. Some are good, some are bad. Poolhall
Junkies is one of the good ones. Yet despite glowing
reviews by film critics and good word of mouth, it seems to have
slipped through the cracks. It's a damn shame though,
because I went to see this one with a mixed group of people
and we ALL loved it. It's one of those movies you can
just pop in anytime. The characters are great, the style
and feel are great, and it's just an overall satisfying film. |
| The
story focuses on Johnny Doyle, a skilled hustler who has done
little else with his life aside from win at pool, and his
little brother Danny who idolizes him. Johnny is trying
to find a new career to please his professional girlfriend and
make something of himself. Unfortunately, when Danny
gets hustled by Johnny's vicious old mentor Joe, Johnny has to
return to his old ways to save Danny and his friends from a
debt they can't possibly pay.
I've heard some professional pool players complain that
this movie misrepresents pool in the mainstream. They
complain that shots are too unrealistic and tricks are used to
make the shots work and so-on. The truth, however, is
that Mike Massey, who plays "St. Louie Louis" in the
film, performed the more difficult shots that the rest of the
cast couldn't. Despite the criticism, there were NO
Hollywood tricks used to make the film work. |
"It
doesn't matter if you like pool or not, you will enjoy this
film."

|
It doesn't matter if you like pool or not, you
will enjoy this film. It's not too heavy, it doesn't try
to bite off more than it can chew, and it's a good time.
Like I said before, mixed crowds will enjoy the film.
You can rent this with your girlfriend, but only if she's
cool. Tell her Rick Schroeder is in it and maybe you can
even get your un-cool girlfriend to watch it. Whatever
tactic you use though, you MUST see this film. Everyone
here at HugeReviews.com highly endorses it. |
