School
of Rock Rocks
by Michael Flanagan
Super
Jack Black plays a “god of rock” in a
movie that can only be described as funny as all hell.
Black clearly showcases his immense…comic ability
with a role specifically written for him by Mike Weiss.
While something like this may make an acting job like
this easy, he works hard throughout the movie.
He plays off of the kids with a non-Cosby-esque bravado
of rudeness blending with outright humor…as rudeness so
often does.
Speaking of the kids, they’re just
great. They’re not cute little kids, nor are they
smart-alecky, over-spoken jerks.
They’re talented actors and musicians, and how
Richard Linkletter found both so successfully is beyond me,
but here’s to him.
Joan Cusack, who also rocks, plays the
uppity, diamond-butted principal with a heart of gold.
She manages to find that perfect mix of meanness and
heart that keeps her from becoming a stock character.
What School of Rock is, basically, is a
perfect blending of all the elements of a great comedy.
These elements are sometimes intentional, often
accidental, and in the case of this movie, always uproariously
funny.
