Silent Hill is one of the best adaptations of a
video game. Part mystery and part horror, Silent
Hill combines both genres to provide the audience a
visual gorefest.
Movies based on video games are a
mixed taste. Super Mario Bros was campy because it
was meant to be. Tomb Raider was okay but not great.
I don’t know why Doom wasn’t Hell on Mars like in
the game. My only
complaint about Silent Hill is that it is a bit too
long. It is a 2 hour movie.
One of the reasons why Silent Hill works is the
screenplay by Roger Avary. The name should sound
familiar. Remember it took two people to write Pulp
Fiction and the best parts were written by Roger
Avary. If you’ve seen Pulp Fiction and Killing Zoe,
you know there will be a lot of religious themes
throughout Silent Hill. Director Christophe Gans
elevates the script and provides the nightmarish
visual effects for the Faceless Nurses and Pyramid
Head. Director Christophe Gans truly loves the game
and didn’t mess around with it.
Silent Hill is Radha Mitchell’s movie. The real
reason to see this movie is to watch her go through
all these levels of Hell. It’s nice to see Sean Bean
play a normal role instead of the usual mean and
gruff guys like Lord of the Rings. Gone is the
annoying deep voice from the commercials when
Jodelle Ferland says “I am the Reaper.” How Jodelle
Ferland says it really brings a chill down your
spine.
Silent Hill works for fans of the
game and nonfans. I played the game once and I
believe the movie has kept
the tone and spirit of the game. The production
design is very faithful to the game. Music was even
scored by
the same man who composes for the Silent Hill games.
Silent Hill is definitely worth watching in the
theaters.
COMMENTARY
TweetyBird:
Pathetic.
Pllllllllllllease! Do they really expect us to believe a police
woman would dress in low slung leather pants and no vest? Could
they have at least 'attempted' to make her look realistic?
