February 2006 by Christian De Matteo
Our man in the field,
Jorge Solis just wrote in with some Sin City
news straight from the horse's mouth. Jorge
had the opportunity to sit in on a conversation with
the one and only Frank Miller at last weekend's
huge, three-day Comicon in Manhattan.
Here's what he
found out about Sin City 2. The story
will based around the Miller book A Dame to Kill
For and several of his short stories from
Miller's collection Booze, Broads and Bullets.
Even more exciting than that, another story line
will be one none of us have ever seen before, a
story created specifically for the movie.
The story exclusive to
the film series will be about Nancy Callahan dealing
with the suicide of John Hartigan. This should
have some heart-tugging and gut-ripping moments, I'm
sure.
Thanks for the
head's up Jorge. So long as the film
prominently features tools from someone's garden
shed and gratuitous noir clichés made wonderful and
viscerally new, I'm in. |

Robert Rodriguez is now billed in the following
categories of film-maker: Cinematographers, Editor,
Original Music, and Producer.
It is said that RR has
revealed that Sin City 2 would be based on Miller's
story A Dame to Kill For
|
| June
2005 by Joe De Matteo At
this date production of Sin City 2 and 3, as
they are being referred to at this time, will start in February 2006.
With the release of SC2 in 2006 and SC3 in 2008.
The official directing credit goes to Frank Miller,
but I believe Robert Rodriguez, the genius behind
Sin City the film, will do some directing as
well, as he did in Sin City. You will remember that Quentin Tarantino
also had directing credits for Sin City.
Furthermore,
I'm personally glad to see that the sequel will be
worked on while the first film is still fresh meat.
This is a highly anticipated film, and those of us
who were blown away by the first film, have high,
very high expectations for the second and the third
films. That is why I am not concerned with
Robert Rodriquez stepping back from directing the
sequels - this may actually be a good decision,
should it be true. My confidence is in Mr.
Rodriguez, I believe that no one else could have
made the Sin City movie that we saw but Robert
Rodriguez (read
my review of Sin City for explanation).
He may actually have made the same decision that
George Lucas made after the success of
Star Wars, when
he, Lucas, found himself overwhelmed by the many
facets of his breakthrough film, which invented new
technologies in order to show his dream on the big
screen. By choosing a director he had faith
in, Lucas was able to keep control over all of the
new
demands the second film made. (The biggest of
which would have been making it much better than the
first film.) And make no
mistake about it, Robert Rodriguez is no less of an envelop
pusher than Lucas was, and he may be more of a
perfectionist.
Robert Rodriguez is a
man with a vision and the ability to make it happen.
And like the Empire Strikes Back, Sin City
2 will have to be deeper, wider, taller and more Sin City than Sin City was.
There isn't much we need
to know about the sequels other than in which order
the graphic novel's stories will be told. Here
is something we do have: It's one of those hot
nights, dry and windless. The kind that makes people
do sweaty, secret things. Dwight's thinking of all
the ways he's screwed up and what he'd give for one
clear chance to wipe the slate clean, to dig his way
out of the numb gray hell that is his life. And he'd
give anything. Just to cut loose. Just to feel the
fire. One more time.
