Some Like It Hot
by Mark Capitelli
HUGE
My mother finally sat me down at 23 years of age to watch the black-and-white comedy
Some Like It Hot starring Jack Lemmon, Tony Curtis, and Marilyn Monroe. I have no prejudices against older films, but many older comedies (with exceptions like the Marx Brothers) often leave me flat. That was definitely not the case with
Some Like It Hot!
Who knew Jack Lemmon could be so funny! Given my age, I’ve only known him in serious roles, or as the straight man opposite Walter Matthau in Grumpy Old Men. Not that I didn’t enjoy him in those roles, but I have a brand new respect for him and finally understand what my Aunt Jane meant when she said that Jim Carrey is funny, “but he’s no Jack Lemmon.”
I think that anyone who has put off seeing this film because of its age should forgo those feelings and give it a shot. The concept of heterosexual men dressing up like women to get jobs (a popular concept ever since this film was made) is almost always good for a laugh, but it was never done better than this.
As if that all wasn’t good enough, you even have the cute and disarmingly charismatic Marilyn Monroe (who I thought did a really good job despite what I had heard), and Tony Curtis who also flexed his comic muscle impressively.
If you like a good comedy with sexual innuendo (who doesn’t) and grown men acting silly, rent this bad-boy. I think anyone over the age of 21 is going to love it (or at least appreciate it).
