the Shrek!
A Funny Animated Movie?

Granted Shrek is
no Chicken Run, but it’s one heck
of a movie!
In the recent tradition of computer
generated family hits, Shrek ranks
higher than any of them.
Not only is it better than Disney, it
quite literally blows Disney away.
Shrek is funny,
but not just funny-ha-ha.
It’s funny because it avoids cliché
like no other animated feature, and it knows
it. Perhaps
it’s because producer Jeffrey Katzenburg
left Disney for Dreamworks, but the film is
chock-full of Disney-satirizing.
Tired of those musical numbers
droning on and on?
Don’t worry.
The creators of Shrek made
sure to let us know that they are, too.
Bored with the towers of
Disneyworld?
One line: “You think he’s trying
to compensate for something?”
This film comes from people who know
their source material—fairy tales, both
classical and Disneyed—and they mock them
to no end.
What results is a
clever farce that must be seen to be
understood.
It removes all the elements that have
been played dead by the recent animated
“hits” and replaces the void with a
refreshing dose of a clever, adventurous new
fairy tale complete with knights, villains,
princesses, dragons, a hearty moral, and, of
course, fairies.
Just don’t get too attached to
them.
