Superman
is Huge!

HUGE
Richard
Donner’s Superman is the best
superhero movie ever made.
It contains all the elements of great
storytelling, not just stories of
superheroes, but drama, comedies, all
movies.
The special effects are great: I
believed a man could fly.
The acting is brilliant: it’s got
Brando!
Gene Hackman!
And Christopher Reeve is the perfect
Superman; never has there been better.
The music is phenomenal.
John Williams of Star Wars and
Indiana Jones.
‘Nuff said.
But what carries this film is the art
of its story.
Superman is three films in
one, three acts of a play, three different
tones of a story, and they meld into one
brilliant story.
Act I
Krypton.
The birthplace of Kal-El, the future
man of steel.
Krypton is filmed as a cold, formal
place.
The language is elevated, the clothes
bright and elegant.
We witness the end of a world and the
love of a father for a son.
Marlon Brando as Jor-El delivers a
moving speech and sends his son to earth in
sparks, explosions, and Biblical Metaphors.
We spend about half an hour on
Krypton, but when it explodes, we feel for
the fallen parents, and their orphaned,
space-traveling child.
Act II
Smallville.
The suffering of Superman as a high
school nerd, Clark Kent.
In a great piece of story, Clark
tells his earth father, Pa Kent that he
wants to show off, make touchdowns, and show
people who he is.
His father tells him that he’s here
for a reason, and it’s more than making
touchdowns.
The act is portrayed beautifully,
with hometown Norman Rockwell farm shots and
fields of grain.
The emotion of Pa Kent’s death, and
Clark telling his mother he has to go, is
highly emotional for a “superhero film.”
And it works.
Act III
Superman.
We get the tights, the cape, the
“S” and the little black lock of hair.
We get the comic book.
We get what the fans want.
Superman and Lois Lane.
Superman vs. Lex Luthor.
We get zaniness and goofy villain
sidekicks and damsels in distress and, of
course, Superman saves the day.
With
Superman, we get a story.
If the beginning had been cut and the
film had only been Superman flying around,
saving people, and beating Lex Luthor, we
would have had an average movie about
Superman.
Here, Donner gives us an epic about
the life of a legend.
Acts I and II provide back-story.
Necessary back-story, and it’s
entertaining.
An hour has gone by before we see the
costume, and we don’t notice, because we
have entered the world of the story of
Superman.
If only creators of modern-day
Superhero films would have studied this,
perhaps by now stories of men with magical
green rings and women piloting invisible
jets saving the day would be winning Academy
Awards instead of Roman slaves in skirts.
Well, by Superman, I am
entertained.
DVD Update
GET
THIS DVD!
On Side A you get Superman,
with added scenes that make the movie even
more enjoyable.
I’m not going to tell you what they
are, and you may not even notice.
Hint: Only Marlon Brando could make
the phrase “secret identity” sound good
on screen.
Also, Richard Donner and “creative
consultant” Tom Mankewitz (who really
wrote the darn thing) provide great
commentary.
Side B provides never before seen
screen tests!
You’ll see that Christopher Reeve
sweats a lot and Leslie Ann Warren would
have made a really bad Lois.
Also, there are great new
documentaries with new interviews with
Reeve, Margot Kidder, Williams, Donner,
Hackman, and countless others, including
Mark (Jimmy Olsen) McClure!
And, of course, more.
Again, get this DVD!
Rating: More than HUGE!
